A Brief History of Bawnogue Women’s Development Group

Bawnogue Women’s Development Group was established in 1990 to respond to the growing sense of isolation that many women living in the area were experiencing. The main aim of the group was to support women to develop their self-confidence and skills, thus enabling them to become more involved in their community and to tackle attitudinal, cultural and structural barriers to women’s equal participation in society

Essential to enabling women to participate in programmes was the provision of a crèche, where women could leave their children in a secure and safe environment.

Over the years Bawnogue Women’s Development Group has had a positive impact on the area.  BWDG deliver a number of services to the local community including FETAC accredited training programmes including Personal Development Provides space which allows women to decide on their future career path, these are funded through the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the V.E.C.

BWDG support an over 55”s group and provide lunch to a group of older people living in the community every Thursday.

BWDG have a good working relationship with other groups and agencies working in the area and participate in many local forums.
